Riddle me this...

As Wink puts it, “We are freed from bibliolatry, the worship of the bible. It is restored to its proper place as witness to the Word of God. And that word is a Person, not a book.”

-Taken from a friend's paper.

Walter Wink said this. Any thoughts on it?

Yeah, I guess some people could and do "worship the Bible," but when people start throwing that term around, I usually assume they're trying to find loopholes in the principles outlined in it.

I don't really understand how you could worship the Bible. If you are that focused on it, don't you have to be into what it's saying? And if that's the case, the Bible always points back to the One who wrote it. So what does it mean to worship the Bible?

I agree with Wink's quote in a sense. Rob Bell wisely responded to some criticism he received from some more fundamentalist leaning types, and pointed out that Christians do not worship the Bible, which is factually accurate and maybe important for some people to hear. Then of course, you have some who will use that phrase to (and I'm sure they think they are doing good) steer people away from the truth.

As much as I've failed as a Christian, frankly, the main reason it is upsetting to see people interpret scripture very liberally on the issue of homosexuality is that it undermines the power of God. When someone says 'homosexual behavior/nature is ok' they are basically admitting that God has no power to change a person struggling with that issue. We are in a desperate situation at that point, because then we've stopped believing that God can actually change people.

Stuff like this is why I said compassion sometimes, in a twisted way, overrides Truth. And for many people, they really FEEL compassionate when they support homosexuals in any and everything they wish. They are fighting for an underdog. What they can't see or understand, due to their 'compassion', is the years of abuse and broken familial relationships that often lead to homosexuality.
